Myofascial Release (or Trigger Point Therapy) is a safe and very effective technique for treating skeletal and muscle immobility and pain.

Gentle and sustained pressure is applied into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions.  This pressure relaxes the contracted muscle and improves the blood flow and lymphatic circulation by stimulating the stretch reflex, restoring motion and reducing pain.

Each treatment is applied directly onto the skin without the use of oils.

The goal of Myofascial Therapy is to stretch and loosen the fascia so it can move more freely, to restore the client’s range of motion, and to relieve pain.  Myofascial therapy is sometimes referred to as 'myofascial release therapy' and may also be referred to as 'myofascial trigger point therapy'.

What is Myofascia

Myo means ‘muscle’ in Greek and Fascia means ‘band’.  The fascia is a three dimentional fibrous network of collagen and elastin fibres surrounded by fluid. This structure weaves its way throughout the entire body from head to toe, surrounding and supporting each muscle, organ, bone, artery, vein and nerve all the way right down into the cellular level.  The fascia does not stop at any insertion point of bone and instead blends with the periosteum and at times travels straight over the attachment site to the next muscle, creating adhesions through and between muscles.

Fascia acts as the body’s energy saving device.  If your posture remains the same for any length of time, the fascia will bind and become rigid.  If you continue to move regularly however, the collagen will take up more elastin and become more flexible.

Suitable for

Myofascial Release is becoming very popular and rightly recognised as the ‘missing’ link in traditional bodywork that historically treated either muscles or bones but not the fascia that connects. It works well for:

  • Poor postural habits
  • Post surgery / accident / fall
  • Post physical or emotional trauma
  • Inflammation or scarring

Myofascial pain can have two sources and can either be generated from the skeletal muscle or connective tissues that are 'bound down' by tight fascia.  Pain can also be generated from damaged myofascial tissue itself, sometimes at a 'trigger point' where muscle fibers have contracted. Those restrictions or contractions inhibit blood flow to the affected structures.

Myofascial Release Therapy is a hands on stretching massage technique to bring about relief, healing and feelings of release to the entire body of an individual.  Over time, injury, illness, build ups and poor posture can put significant demands on the fascia, forcing them to retreat into tight and constricted pathways through our body.  Myofascial Therapy releases restrictions within the fascial network (connective tissue). It involves gentle stretching and sustained pressure (a minimum of 2-3 minutes in each position) to allow the stuck, hardened and dehydrated fascia to stretch, move, elongate and return to a pliable and healthy state.

The therapy technique uses hands-on movements to disturb and disrupt these soft tissues within our bodies to trigger healing and relief processes to help the balance within our bodies being restored.

What is involved?

A typical Myofascial Release treatment lasts for about one hour and may also include an initial physical assessment, unclothed, during which the practitioner can familiarise themselves with the current state of the patient.  Progress is gauged by the level of increased motion or function experienced, and/or decrease in pain felt by the patient.

After the massage therapy, the flexibility and movement throughout your body will be noticeably more functional and responsive.  Myofascial Release Therapy can help treat both emotional and physical interruptions and injuries.

A combination or number of treatments may be beneficial.

Additional Treatments with Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial therapy can be a precursor and complement to other treatments. People  receiving myofascial therapy also may benefit from other forms of nonsurgical care that aim to control pain and keep muscles and joints warm and loose. These include:

  • Using non-prescription pain relief such as ibuprofen
  • Applying heat to soothe constricted muscles or using ice to calm swollen areas
  • Doing self-stretching exercises to maintain flexibility and increase range of motion or aerobic exercise to increase blood flow to the affected areas.

Myofascial Therapy can enhance or assist other treatments such as accupuncture, manipulation, physical therapy, or occupational therapy.  Myofascial Therapy can improve skeletal and muscular alignment prior to surgery, or help athletes achieve better alignment before sporting competitions.  By targeting specific areas of the fascial system, myofascial therapy can help prepare clients for the more aggressive forms of strengthening, or provide pain relief for people with restricted flexibility and movement, thus allowing the receiver to return to normal movement and greater function.
